Atlas of Halcyon Halls

Atlas of Halcyon Halls

I slipped away quietly as the summer term drew to a close on that final day, observing teachers' shoulders soften under a cascade of gifts, enveloped in warm hugs from children and parents alike. They'd fulfilled their duties with distinction, summer's joyous anticipation humming in the air. Another fruitful school-year had passed – and now, it was their time to savour it all. Thus, wearing a smile, I retreated discreetly. When triumph is declared, it is their success - and rightfully so. Should the spectre of blame ever surface, that burden is solely mine to bear. The intricate dance of relishing in "the best job in the world" juxtaposed against the recognition of a tremendous responsibility – sometimes acknowledged, at other times overlooked – is an experience singular to the realm of headship, which has inspired this poem. Enjoy.
